PhD - Marketing

The PhD program in Marketing prepares students for an intellectually challenging career in academia. Our program has a strong emphasis on conducting original research along with preparing students to publish in academic journals at the highest level. Over the course of the program, students will be exposed to a broad range of topics in the field of marketing, and we encourage students to find a research area that best fits their interests.

Our program is purposely small and very selective, so we can have a one-on-one relationship with our doctoral students, thus providing a richer academic experience. MSU's PhD program is built around a mentor/apprentice relationship where students have ample opportunity to be involved in research projects with faculty. Along with our research focus, we are committed to educating doctoral students to excel in teaching and instruction. Our objective is for students to be fully prepared to handle the research and teaching requirements in a university setting.

The program here at Mississippi State from marketing specifically, really focuses on preparing us for teaching and preparing us for research. So our first year we focus specifically on the classroom and trying to get research projects up and running so that we can carry those over into the second year. And once we've been exposed to that, then in a second year, we learn how to actually work in the classroom setting and we're assigned different classrooms, one for each semester. And I think that transition ultimately is going to be a lot easier when we get into our career.

Given the very diverse faculty that we have in our department, students are able to research nearly any topic in marketing. Services, supply chain, social media, nonprofit, all of those have been research dissertations produced in this department. Now we are very excited to share that our program has 100% placement. And I think part of the reason our students are so successful in this program is because of some of the resources that we provide. A student that is admitted to the program that receives an assistantship will have a stipend that goes along with that. In addition, their tuition is covered and mandatory fees, as well as additional funds for conferences or research dollars that they need to pursue their dissertation topic.
