PhD - Information Systems

The PhD program in Business Information Systems (BIS) at Mississippi State University offers students the opportunity to learn in a challenging and dynamic academic environment. The program prepares students to teach and do research in a variety of academic settings.  Our faculty work closely with students to help them learn how to excel in the classroom. The program offers courses about teaching methodologies, and faculty provide students with teaching materials that they can adapt for many of the courses they teach. By the time doctoral students graduate, they are qualified to assume responsibility for the foundational courses that most universities expect new faculty to teach and manage, as well as more specialized or advanced courses such as programming classes, systems analysis and design, data base, decision support systems, and business telecommunications.

Our program is a four year program in which students take approximately two years of coursework. And then in third year they study and complete their comprehensive exams and start working on their dissertation. And all the while continuing to work on papers with faculty members. Our students have a chance to do some teaching and some of our students have won doctoral student teaching awards. This gives them an opportunity to say yes, I've taught database or yes, I've taught system analysis and I got good evaluations. We've had very good success with our students, getting campus interviews that turned into job offers, and they're all placed at good schools. Our assistantship for those students who are on assistantship provides funding that covers plenty for the living expenses in Starkville which is a low cost of living city, and includes also all of their tuition and travel expenses. Currently at $4,000 a year if you go to conferences.

Our department, always encourage a good positive And collaborative environment. And PhD students we have good relationship and we also maintain good relationship with our professors. So if you have any challenge, you can always go to our professors and talk with them. They always support you and give you great answers.
